Byetta ( Exenatide)

Byetta (also known as Exenatide)  is a medication approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is given through an injection twice a day or as directed by a physician. 

The main side effects of Byetta include:

  • acidic or sour stomach
  • belching
  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • indigestion
  • nausea
  • vomiting

After reviewing several different accounts of  serious health complications resulting from the use of Byetta, the United States Food and Drug Administration added a warning to the labeling of Byetta in 2007. In August 2008, four additional deaths were reported to the FDA; while no definite relationship had been established, the FDA was reportedly considering additional changes to the drug's labeling.

The University of Colorado Hospital has recently embarked on what news reports have deemed a "groundbreaking medical trial" for patients suffering from pancreatic cancer .
